About Our Films

Indigenous adventure education packages
Have you ever felt the earth shake as painted dancers stomp ancient rhythms?...healed injuries with bush medicine?…built a didgeridoo from scratch?...hunted down a kangaroo in the desert?...made fire the traditional way?

Sandtraks' professionally-designed and community-driven education packages allow you to learn by experiencing the excitement in your own wild outdoor classroom!

No wonder our products are endorsed by education departments and community elders and are already being used in over 1000 Australian schools.  They are now available in international format for the interest and education of people and students worldwide.

What can our packages be used for?
Why are our packages unique?
Why are our packages important?

What’s in each package?
Each package delivers a complete learning experience and contains a:

  • DVD film featuring Indigenous communities on location around Australia and
  • Professionally developed CD rom of creative, flexible learning tasks, which can be either used to develop rich learning activities or respond to specific elements of the film
  • Presented in eye-catching, Indigenous designed packaging

The DVD Films
Shot and edited by a professionally trained cinematographer/editor

  • Document how traditions stretching back over 50,000 years are passed from elder to child and adapted to the modern world
  • High quality, unique footage, entertaining and information-packed narrative, set to vibrant Indigenous music
  • Filmed through the eyes of children – so it speaks to children and the child in all of us

The learning tasks
Specifically designed to complement the DVD film comprising outcomes and links to syllabus documents for Kindergarten to Year 10 students, but enjoyed and beneficial to higher education students and adults alike.

  • Professionally developed by Indigenous and non-Indigenous education officers to ensure cultural accuracy
  • Comprehensive and flexible - We don’t think Indigenous education belongs in a vacuum! So our packages are designed for use across a wide range of curriculum areas including society and culture, English, Aboriginal studies, science, food technology, and creative arts
  • The activities can be used to respond to specific elements of the film or clustered to develop rich learning tasks. The tasks have been designed as open-ended to allow teachers the flexibility to cater for a range of learning needs
  • They are based on the ‘before, during and after’ framework – an adaptation of the ERICA (Effective Reading in the Content Area) reading framework (Morris and Stewart-Dore, 1984). This framework supports teachers to help students to prepare for tasks; think through and organise their ideas; and demonstrate their understanding of the task

Specifically our packages can be used to:

  • Expose non-Indigenous children to positive information about Indigenous people and their culture, featuring children of their own age
  • Assist teachers in mainstream schools to satisfy Indigenous culture teaching requirements using a high-quality educational resource
  • Aid the preservation of language and culture (within and across different communities)
  • Engage Indigenous children to maximise mainstream learning outcomes and
  • Assist teachers who may have limited Indigenous-specific training to teach in a culturally appropriate way

Why are our package unique?
The material we produce is unique, with no other products available that document Indigenous culture in a way that is:

  • Filmed through the 'eyes' of the children
  • Intimate, entertaining, stimulating
  • Positive and inspiring
  • Developed in partnership with the local community. This gives the additional benefit of involving young people and their community in development and production, leading to skills development, capacity building and increased community pride and self-esteem (click here to read about how we work) link to about us
  • Top-quality: our action-packed films are professionally shot and produced; our teaching notes are developed by experienced education officers

Why are our packages important?
Our resources are a vital step in helping to preserve Australia’s cultural heritage. By allowing students and their teachers to explore Indigenous lives and stories, they can develop a greater understanding and respect for the culture and traditions of Indigenous people

  • Sandtraks provides schools and other organisations with much needed quality, up-to-date resources for teaching an Indigenous perspective
  • Our products give young Australians a chance to learn about Indigenous culture in a fun and relevant way and enables both urban and rural Indigenous children to access resources that are positive and culturally relevant
